House committee OKs HB 2800 allowing psychologists to write prescriptions

Legislation that expands access to mental health care by allowing specially trained psychologists to write prescriptions moved out of a key House health care committee last week. Earlier last week a subcommittee adopted amendments beefing up already strong training and continuing education for prescribing psychologists.

SALEM, Ore – Oregon’s mental health care system already is overstressed. What happens to Oregon reservists and national guard members – and their family members – when they need attention because of wartime post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other mental health or psychosocial ills? Granting psychologists prescription-writing privileges could be part of Oregon’s response to the surge in PTSD cases.

Continuation of House hearing set for Thursday on prescription-writing bill

SALEM, Ore. (March 22, 2007) – A second hearing in Salem was rushed on to the schedule book this week following Tuesday’s first debate about HB 2800, the proposal to grant limited prescription-writing privileges to qualified psychologists. Continuation of the hearing started Tuesday is set for March 22 (Thursday), 3 PM in Hearing Room E at the Capitol. Testimony will be before the House Health Care Subcommittee on Health Policy. The bill focuses on ensuring that licensed psychologists – before gaining prescriptive authority – must receive an additional three years of education and supervised clinical work, in addition to other safeguards.

SALEM, Ore. (March 15, 2007) – A legislative proposal expanding the quality of care and access to mental health care services in Oregon is scheduled for its first public hearing 3 p.m., March 20, 2007 in Hearing Room E. The Health Care Subcommittee on Health Policy will take testimony on House Bill 2800, a bill proposing to grant limited prescription-writing privileges to qualified psychologists. The Oregon Psychological Association (OPA) backs the bill.

Psychologists seeking prescription-writing privileges for specially trained practitioners

OPA announced today it will ask the 2007 Oregon legislature to grant prescription-writing privileges to qualified psychologists. Medical doctors, nurse practitioners, physican’s aides and psychiatrists can prescribe medications in Oregon used in the treatment of mental and nervous disorders. Psychologists, the medical professionals who spend the most time helping patients with mental health or emotional issues, cannot prescribe medications.
